Course introduction

Words are just as essential as visual elements when it comes to design. Both help guide the user through an experience and help make it an enjoyable—not a frustrating—one. In this course, we'll explore UX writing, content strategy, and content design as tools to think critically about the user experience by putting the user first. We'll examine how even a few words of microcopy can make a big difference in how the user knows what to do or what to expect.

Every year engineer/designer/investor (Global Head, Computational Design and Inclusion at Automattic, who makes WordPress), John Maeda, presents his Design in Tech Report at mega conference SXSW. In 2017 he made the case that words can be just as powerful as graphics and the key role of writing in the design process. Having writing skills will not only benefit the products you work on but also help you talk about your work. If you're a designer who can write, you'll have a leg up on the competition.

✍️ Whether you're an experienced writer or just starting out, you’re guaranteed to pick up some new skills to add to your toolkit.
