Sort Evidence from Opinion in One Real Case

You now have the full Part 1 toolkit: what evidence is, the kinds it comes in, how to weigh its strength, and how to tell a real claim from an opinion, an assertion, or a one-off story. This chapter puts all of it to work on a single messy case, the kind you actually meet when a group of people argues its way toward a decision. You will watch one case worked through in full, then run the same steps yourself.

Meet the Case: Should the Garden Switch to Raised Beds?

Picture a community garden with a dozen shared plots. Over winter, the committee floats a question: should they rebuild several of the ground-level beds as raised beds? At the next meeting, six members speak up. Here is exactly what each one says.

  • Maya: “Raised beds just look neater, and I like how they tidy up the plots.”

  • Ben: “Raised beds are the better choice, everyone knows that.”

  • Priya: “My cousin put in raised beds at home and hasn’t stopped raving about them.”

  • From the garden logbook: “Our log shows the two raised beds we trialed produced about a third more per square meter than the ground-level beds, across three growing seasons.”

  • Sam: “I recorded the morning soil temperature in one raised bed and one ground bed every day for two weeks this spring; the raised bed ran about 2 to 3 degrees warmer, which lets us plant earlier.”

  • The county master gardener, who advises dozens of community plots: “Raised beds usually improve drainage and cut down on soil compaction.”

Six statements, all aimed at the same decision, and they are not worth the same. The job now is to sort them, in two steps.

Start by Sorting the Six Statements

Run each statement through the one question from the last chapter: what is this resting on? That single question sorts all six.

Notice what the sort does. Three of the six, Maya’s, Ben’s, and Priya’s, cannot carry the decision on their own. That is not a judgment on the people; it is simply what their statements rest on, a taste, a bare declaration, and a single story. The three that remain are actual evidence, and those are the ones worth weighing.

Then Rank the Evidence by Strength

You are left with three genuine pieces of evidence. Rank them with the four questions from the chapter on weighing evidence: is it relevant, is it reliable, how much does it cover, and can it be verified?

The logbook comes out on top because it answers the garden’s actual question, more food from the same space, using this garden’s own recorded results over three seasons. Sam’s temperatures are careful and firsthand, but they measure one benefit, warmth for earlier planting, rather than the whole case, so they support the decision without settling it. The master gardener’s word is genuinely useful, especially on drainage, but it is a general statement about raised beds everywhere, not evidence about these particular plots.

Put the two steps together and the meeting looks very different. Instead of six voices at equal volume, you have the opinion, the assertion, and the lone story set aside, three real pieces of evidence lined up by strength, and a clear front-runner pointing toward “yes, the trial beds did better here.” That is what sorting evidence from opinion buys you: a decision resting on the sturdiest thing in the room, not the loudest.

Now take a fresh case through the same two steps on your own.

A residents’ association is arguing about whether evening noise from a new café terrace is a real problem worth raising with the town. Six people speak up at the meeting:

  • “If you ask me, that café has ruined the whole character of the street.”

  • “Everyone around here is fed up with it, that’s just a fact.”

  • “My downstairs neighbor told me she’s been woken up twice since the terrace opened.”

  • “The association’s complaint log records nine separate noise complaints about the terrace since it opened in June.”

  • “I used a decibel app at my open window every evening for ten days; after 10 p.m. the readings ran noticeably higher than before the terrace opened.”

  • “The town’s environmental health officer measured evening sound levels on our street last month and found they exceed the local night-time limit.”

Do two things:

  1. Classify each of the six statements as an opinion, an assertion, an anecdote, or a piece of evidence, and where it is evidence, note which kind;

  2. Take the statements you classified as evidence and rank them from strongest to weakest, giving a one-line reason for each using the four questions: relevance, reliability, coverage, and verifiability.

Step 2, rank the evidence

  1. Officer’s measurement (strongest): highly relevant (it measures the exact thing in dispute against an official limit), reliable (a trained, neutral official with proper equipment), and verifiable (the reading is on record). It is the piece a skeptic would find hardest to wave away;

  2. Complaint log (close second): relevant and verifiable, with decent coverage (nine separate complaints, not one), though a complaint records how someone felt rather than a measured level. Its strength is the pattern across many people;

  3. Decibel-app readings (solid, but weakest of the three): relevant and firsthand, but a phone app is a rougher instrument than official equipment, and the readings come from a single window over ten days. Useful independent support, thinnest of the three on its own.

The three non-evidence statements, the opinion, the assertion, and the single anecdote, are set aside: they may reflect real feeling, but none can carry the association’s case by itself.
