Analyze Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Optimize Your Use of the Analysis Tool

If you have closed it, reopen your analysis tool (or get started using this template) to complete the second task.

Step 2 is to identify your strengths and weaknesses.
Step 2 is to identify your strengths and weaknesses in relation to your goal.

If you wish to explore several goals, it would be better to copy the tool for each than to mix everything together.

Try to write your strengths and weaknesses in the form of study subjects. For example, if “being innovative” is a strength for you, you could translate this into “design thinking” as a subject to study. Or if “organizing teams” is a weakness for you, you could translate this into “project management” as a subject to study.

Capitalize on Your Strengths

Which of your qualities will help you achieve your goal?
Which of your qualities will help you achieve your goal?

I suggest three ways of listing your strengths.

  1. Simplified self-assessment: Fill in the column with the intelligences, subjects, activities or even active verbs that come to mind.

  2. In-depth self-assessment: Learn more by following Part 1 of our course Develop Your Career Plan

  3. Professional skills assessment: Make an appointment with a professional career counselor, your manager or a specialist in human resources.

Correct Your Weaknesses

What are the aspects of the field in which you need to invest more time and energy than before?
What are the aspects of the field in which you need to invest more time and energy?

Part of your learning plan will include correcting or making up for your weaknesses in order to pave the way to reaching your strategic goal. At this stage, you are going to first identify your weaknesses and then transform those into subjects to study (which, if mastered, would address specific weaknesses).

Get feedback! The perspective of an external observer can be very useful. Call upon people you trust to play this role, and remember that a healthy relationship to criticism is the essence of a good learning attitude.

Let's Recap!

Having defined a strategic goal, choose potential subjects to study by identifying:

  • your strengths, through a skills assessment.

  • your weaknesses, through personal honesty and getting the perspective of someone you trust.

Once you have identified your strengths and weaknesses, proceed to the next chapter to switch on your radar for opportunities and threats.
