Understand the Challenges of Design Thinking

Welcome to this introductory design thinking course!

If you want to:

  • enhance your creativity,

  • become more agile,

  • learn to work and think differently,

  • lead projects in an innovative way...

you're in the right place!

In this course, you will come to understand that design is not just a department in a company. It is the heart of a human-centered strategy that makes it possible to meet the needs of different target audiences and solve potentially complex problems. Companies are increasingly drawing inspiration from it to create impactful products and services.

But what is not yet common knowledge is that anyone can use its principles in their own professional activities. It's a fascinating topic to delve into—and accessible to all!

In this course, you will learn about the importance of design and realize how fundamental it is to foster innovation, regardless of the industry. You will learn to think like a designer and apply a set of best practices to your everyday projects.

Adopt a Posture of Openness

Whether you’re still a student or already part of the workforce, this course will transform the way you see things.

In this course, you’ll gradually familiarize yourself with this new posture that will change your approach to your work.

And as you'll see, it's an easy-to-follow, structured, step-by-step methodology.

When the global design and innovation company IDEO came up with its design thinking methodology, it set out some basic principles to keep in mind before embarking on a project:

  1. Accept that you will have to step out of your comfort zone to be able to draw inspiration from the world and others around you.

  2. Approach problems from a child’s  point of view and accept that you won't always have THE right answer.

  3. Be optimistic and enthusiastic about the future. See it as something that is yet to be built.

See? It's a very positive vision!

Work on a Project That’s Close to Your Heart

Most designers today use this methodology on a daily basis. It is universal and ubiquitous.

Whether you're a salesperson, human resources director, or even a teacher, you can use the principles of design thinking to:

  • transform a constraint into an opportunity,

  • analyze a project,

  • create a prototype,

  • test a product,

  • or even come up with a new idea.

I encourage you to apply what you are learning in this course to a project you are currently working on—even one as simple as revamping your résumé!

If you don't have a specific project in the works, try to identify something in your life or job that you could improve:

  • Is there something you don't generally notice and thus never question?

  • Is there something that causes recurring problems?

These are good initial questions to ask yourself when creating an opportunity to work on a project that incorporates design thinking.

Let's Dig Deeper

Design thinking is, simply put, the thought process of a designer. It's important to note that it is from this philosophy that all trends in design emerge: experience design, interface design, interaction design, to name only the most common digital ones.

This fundamental step-by-step method will show you how to:

  • detect interesting opportunities,

  • correctly understand needs,

  • solve problems in an innovative way,

  • fully understand prototyping,

  • learn from mistakes by taking constructive feedback into account.

It’s the philosophical framework of any profession that involves design!

So, excited to dive right in? See you next chapter!
