After our short (but highly enticing!) introduction to ChatGPT, I bet you’re wondering what you can do with it yourself! 😁
Create Your Account
If everything’s working correctly, you’ll see the welcome screen, which will ask you to log in or sign up to create an account:
If everything’s working correctly, you’ll be asked to create your account. Enter your email address:
And your password:
You’ll then receive an email asking you to verify your account:
Configure Your Account
Once you’ve done this, you’ll be asked to provide some more information, including your name, date of birth, and telephone number. As part of the account creation process, you’ll receive a code via SMS to verify your phone number, which you will then be asked to enter online.
ChatGPT checks your identity the first time you use it.
Finished setting up your account? Well done! 😃
You’ll see a number of welcome screens explaining how ChatGPT works. Essentially, what these screens are telling you is:
ChatGPT is a free tool designed for research purposes. The product is still under development and might generate errors, such as giving incorrect or biased information.
The data from your conversations will be used to train and improve the AI, so do not share any sensitive or confidential data.
ChatGPT works even better if you take some time to have a conversation with it. Go ahead and keep the conversation going to see it improve. Your opinion matters, so you can say if you found a response useful or not. You can also discuss ChatGPT with other (human) users on a chat platform called Discord.
Once you’ve progressed through these screens, you’ll see ChatGPT’s user interface.
There are three main sections in the interface:
Right at the bottom, you’ll see the area where you can type your messages for ChatGPT.
The main area in the middle is where the conversation with ChatGPT will be displayed. At the moment, it’s showing you a few examples.
The left-hand area contains a history of your conversations. You can use this section to navigate through your previous conversations.
Is the ChatGPT interface always in English?
Yes, but you can talk to ChatGPT in other languages, such as French, Spanish, or a number of other options. If you know any other languages, give it a go—it really works! 😃
So, what should I ask it?
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to cover in this course. All will become clear!
Let’s Recap
If you want to use the free version of ChatGPT, just create an account on the ChatGPT website.
You create your account by providing your email address and choosing a password. You’ll then have to validate your account using a verification email.
The user interface is split into three main sections: the writing area, the conversation with ChatGPT, and a history of your conversations.
ChatGPT is continuously being improved and can sometimes give erroneous or biased information, so you need to be alert. Bear in mind that OpenAI uses your messages to improve the AI engine, so avoid sharing confidential information.
ChatGPT is a genuine polyglot. You can speak to it in English, French, Spanish, and German, among other languages.
In the next chapter, we’re going to start using ChatGPT properly, so let’s go!
