This chapter puts them all in a single line. First, watch one ordinary, vague concern become a scoped, researchable question with a full Question Canvas attached, using nothing but moves you have already learned. Then you will run the same method yourself on a fresh topic and check your work against a model solution.
Here is the starting point. A small community center has one spare room that sits empty on weekday evenings, and a volunteer committee that would like to put it to good use. At a meeting, one member says: “We should just use that room for whatever helps the community most.”
That sentence is where most groups start, and it is not yet something you can research. It is not even a question, and “helps the community most” is a values judgment dressed up as a fact. Two concrete proposals are on the table: run the room as a quiet study room for local students, or as a weekly board-game evening for isolated older residents. Everything below turns that fuzzy wish into something evidence can actually settle.
First, apply the split from earlier in this part. “Which use helps the community most?” is a mixed concern: it tangles questions evidence can answer with questions only values can settle. Pull them apart before doing anything else.
The evidence-answerable questions hiding inside it:
How many local students would regularly use a weekday-evening study room, and how many older residents would come to a game evening?
How much would each option cost to set up and run for one term (desks and lamps versus games and refreshments)?
How many volunteer hours a week would each option need?
The values questions that remain:
Do we care more about supporting students’ studying or about easing isolation among older residents?
Whose needs should come first when the room can only host one option?
Keep the first list; that is your research target. Park the second list honestly, as a choice the committee must make rather than a fact you can look up. You have not decided anything yet, but you now know exactly which part of the concern evidence can help with.
The answerable list still holds three separate questions, and you cannot chase all of them at once. Pick the single angle that most drives the decision: expected demand, meaning how many people would actually turn up for each option. Cost and volunteer hours matter, but they only count once you know whether anyone would come, so set them aside for now.
Now set the boundaries.
Who: local students of study age, and residents over a chosen age, say 65 and above.
What: likely regular attendance, not one-off curiosity on opening night.
Where: this community center’s spare room, on weekday evenings.
When: across a single trial term, about three months.
Put it together as one comparison: “Over one trial term, how would likely regular attendance compare between a weekday-evening study room for local students and a weekly game evening for residents over 65, in this center’s spare room?”
Run the fault check from earlier: no smuggled-in answer (it does not assume which option wins), a measurable yardstick (regular attendance), and boundaries on who, what, where, and when. The question passes.
Next, confirm the question is answerable in practice, not just in principle. Name at least one realistic, public source for each side of the comparison: a short sign-up survey run at the center, attendance figures from a comparable study club or game evening already running at this or a nearby center, and any usage numbers the center already keeps. Real evidence exists and you could reach it, so the question clears the practice test.
Then fix the measurable element and its units. For each option, count average regular attendees per week across the trial term; alongside it, note the setup-and-running cost per term and the volunteer hours per week. Those are the numbers that will let the two options be compared honestly rather than argued over.
Name the decision behind the question. The volunteer committee will act, and what they will do is choose which single option to trial next term with their one room slot and limited volunteer time. A real choice depends on the answer, so this is a genuine inquiry with a finish line.
Now write the success standard in advance: “A credible answer rests on regular-attendance estimates for both options, drawn from a sign-up survey plus attendance figures from at least one comparable existing program, recent and local enough to trust, together with each option’s term cost and weekly volunteer hours. I will be confident once I have attendance estimates for both options from at least two independent sources that point the same way.” That sentence tells you exactly when to stop gathering and decide.

Here is one strong way to frame the topic. Yours will read differently and can still be right, so compare the shape of the reasoning rather than the exact words.

Realistic public sources: a mapping app’s cycling and driving times for the route, published local fuel and parking prices, and a few timed trial rides the friend could make personally.
Measurable element: minutes door to door per trip, averaged over several trips, and cost per week in local currency.
Decision and success standard:
Decision: the friend deciding whether to switch their regular commute from car to bike.
Success standard: “A credible answer rests on door-to-door times from at least three real trips each way, plus this month’s actual fuel and parking costs, all specific to my route. Notice that the model keeps the fitness benefit out of the scoped question on purpose. It matters to the friend’s decision, but it is a second question with its own measure, and bundling it in would break the one-question rule you practiced. If you scoped the fitness angle instead, that works too, as long as you kept it to a single measurable question with its own boundaries and success standard.
