Synthesize Evidence From Start to Finish

Across the last five chapters you built the synthesis method one move at a time: organize the evidence, weigh it by quality, read its numbers and words together, reconcile what conflicts, and conclude with honest confidence. This final chapter puts all five moves in a single line. First you will watch one fresh set of partial, conflicting sources become a single defensible answer, using nothing but moves you already know. Then you will run the same method yourself on a new evidence set and check your work against a model solution at the end of the chapter.

Meet the Evidence Set

Here is a question a household could actually face. Someone wants to cut the water their home uses and asks whether the dishwasher is really the greener choice: “For a typical household washing a full day’s dishes, does a modern dishwasher use less water than washing the same dishes by hand?” The decision behind it is simple, whether to rely on the dishwasher to save water, and you have gathered four sources.

  • Source A, the dishwasher maker’s product page: claims the machine uses “up to 80% less water than washing by hand.”

  • Source B, an independent water-utility test report: measured a full modern dishwasher at about 10 liters per cycle against roughly 40 liters for a typical hand-wash under a running tap; it adds that a half-full cycle still uses about the same 10 liters, so the water per item roughly doubles, and that an efficient hand-wash in a filled bowl uses far less than the running-tap figure.

  • Source C, a consumer magazine’s hands-on review: says the dishwasher wins clearly only when you run it full, and that a careful hand-washer using a bowl saves nearly as much.

  • Source D, aggregated customer reviews: mixed, with larger households praising the savings and small households who run half loads, or who hand-wash carefully, reporting little or no gain.

Organize the Sources into a Synthesis Matrix

Start where Part 2 always starts: pull the factors from the question and lay the sources against them. The question is about water use, and the sources keep raising two conditions, how full the load is and how you hand-wash, so those become rows alongside water use itself. Now read it row by row and name the patterns.

  • Water per wash: broad agreement that the machine uses less, but heavily conditioned. B measures it, C and D point the same way, and A makes the loudest, least conditional claim while being the source that sells the machine.

  • Load fullness: a clear pattern that A is silent on. B, C, and D all independently say the win depends on running the machine full.

  • Hand-washing method: the same shape again. B, C, and D all note that an efficient bowl-wash closes much of the gap, and again A says nothing about it.

The matrix has already handed you the shape of the answer: the sources agree the dishwasher wins when full, they agree the advantage depends on two conditions, and the one source claiming the biggest unconditional saving is the one with something to sell.

Weigh the Sources by Quality

By a head count, “the dishwasher saves a lot” looks like the winner: the maker says so and plenty of reviews agree. But you weigh, you do not count. Put each source through the method, relevance, and independence check.

  • Source B, the utility test report: measured water use directly, on exactly this question, with nothing to sell. Strong method, on-target relevance, genuinely independent. This is your highest-weight source.

  • Source A, the manufacturer’s page: relevant, but its method is opaque, its wording hedges (“up to 80%”), and it is the least independent source possible. Low weight for settling the disputed figure.

  • Source C, the magazine’s hands-on review: a real independent trial, on topic, resting on impression rather than measured liters. Medium weight, and genuinely useful on the load-fullness condition it observed first-hand.

  • Source D, the user reviews: many voices, which is the trap. They echo each other, their relevance swings with household size, and none measured anything. Treat them as a soft signal, not a heavyweight.

One strong source rightly outweighs a crowd of weak ones, so the honest reading follows the utility report and treats the manufacturer’s “up to 80%” as the weakest evidence in the room, not the loudest-and-therefore-truest.

Reason Across the Numbers and Words

Your highest-weight source speaks in numbers, so read them the careful way. The 10 liters against 40 liters measures one specific thing: a full machine against a running-tap hand-wash. It is precise but narrow, and its baseline matters, because 40 liters is a wasteful way to hand-wash. The manufacturer’s “up to 80%” is a ceiling with a hidden baseline: 80% less than which hand-washing method, exactly? Measured against a careful bowl-wash, the gap would be far smaller.

There is an honest-measure point too. The report counts liters per cycle, but what you care about is water per equivalent load. A half-empty cycle still uses about 10 liters, so its water per item roughly doubles, which is exactly why a small household running half loads sees less benefit than the headline suggests.

Then let the words discipline the numbers. The magazine’s “wins clearly only when run full” and the reviews’ “careful hand-washers still beat the machine” explain why the measured gap shrinks in real kitchens. Numbers and words together say the same honest thing: the machine wins comfortably when full and compared against a wasteful hand-wash, and much less so otherwise.

Reconcile the Conflict

One real-looking clash remains: the dishwasher saves a lot of water, or it barely saves any. Work the four moves.

  • Real conflict? Only partly. The enthusiastic sources are mostly describing full loads compared against a running tap; the skeptical ones are describing half loads or an efficient bowl-wash. They are answering the same question under different boundaries.

  • Hidden condition? Yes, two of them: load fullness and hand-washing method. Both claims are true under their own conditions, and the split in the user reviews stops looking like noise the moment you name them.

  • Weigh what remains. The last genuine clash is the manufacturer’s “up to 80%” against the utility report’s measured saving, which is real but rests on comparison with a wasteful hand-wash. The report measured directly with nothing to sell, so it wins, and you treat 80% as an unrepresentative ceiling.

  • Report honestly. Nothing is left genuinely unresolved, so you can state a clean answer, but with graded confidence.

Notice the bad moves you did not make. You did not cherry-pick by dropping the half-load data, you did not give the manufacturer’s 80% false balance against the measured report, and you did not split the difference into a limp “it saves some water sometimes.” You reconciled by naming the conditions and weighing what remained.

Draw the Integrated Conclusion

Gather it into the five-part integrated answer.

  • The answer: for a typical household, a modern dishwasher run full uses clearly less water than washing the same dishes by hand under a running tap; but for half-empty loads, or against someone who hand-washes efficiently in a filled bowl, the advantage shrinks and can disappear.

  • The support: all four sources agree the machine wins when full, and the highest-weight source, the independent utility report, measured it (about 10 liters against 40). Load fullness and hand-washing method were the hidden conditions that reconciled the conflict, and the manufacturer’s “up to 80%” was down-weighted as a best-case ceiling.

  • The confidence: high for the full-load-against-running-tap comparison, because independent sources agree and the strongest one measured it; lower for the exact liters and for the efficient-bowl-washer case, which rests largely on one report plus impressions.

  • The uncertainty: the efficient-hand-washing comparison rests on impression rather than measurement, and nothing in the sources covered energy or detergent, only water.

  • What would change it: a second independent measurement showing a full machine using as much water as a running-tap hand-wash, or a measured bowl-wash beating a full machine, would move the conclusion.

Compare that with where a careless reader lands: “the maker says up to 80%, so dishwashers save loads.” Your answer is narrower, honest about its limits, and defensible line by line, which is exactly what a synthesized conclusion should be.

  • Source 4, a neighborhood forum thread: mixed, with some residents preferring bottled for taste and peace of mind, and others saying the tap is fine and far cheaper.

There is one number to read carefully (the safety claim and the measured levels) and one real conflict to reconcile (“bottled is safer” against “tap is fine”). Work the same five moves you just watched:

  • Organize the four sources into a small synthesis matrix built from the parts of the question.

  • Weigh each source by method, relevance, and independence, rather than counting them.

  • Read what the number actually measures and what it is compared against.

  • Reconcile the conflict by checking whether it is real, looking for a hidden condition, and weighing what remains.

  • Draw an integrated answer with stated confidence, your remaining uncertainty, and what would change your mind.

Keep everything to public information, and give it more time than feels comfortable, because the honest work is in the weighing and the reconciling.

Weigh the sources:

  • Source 2, the water authority report: an official measured record, directly on the safety question, independent. Highest weight.

  • Source 3, the consumer investigation: independent, measured, and it adds the plumbing condition. High weight.

  • Source 1, the brand page: relevant but opaque, hedged (“up to”), and the least independent source, since it sells the water. Low weight.

  • Source 4, the forum: a soft signal about taste and preference, which is a different question from safety. Low weight on safety.

Read the number: “up to 100 times cleaner” is a ceiling with a hidden baseline, cleaner than what, measured how? The trustworthy figure is the authority’s measured “well below limits.” The taste comments answer a different question than the one asked.

Reconcile the conflict:

  • Real conflict? Mostly not. The safety worry is answered, the tap supply meets every standard, and the “bottled is safer” belief rests on the brand claim and on taste, not on measured safety.

  • Hidden condition? Yes: household plumbing. The water leaving the treatment works is safe, but a few homes with old lead pipes add metals at their own tap. So “the tap supply is safe” and “some taps show raised metals” are both true under different plumbing.

  • Weigh what remains: the brand’s “100x” against two independent measured reports. The reports win, and you treat “100x” as an unverified ceiling.

Integrated answer:

  • The answer: for this town’s supply, the official report and the independent investigation agree the tap water is safe and meets every standard, so bottled water is not safer for most homes; the one real exception is homes with old lead pipework, where the household’s own plumbing, not the water supply, can raise metal levels.

  • The support: two independent, measured sources agree on general safety; the plumbing condition reconciled the apparent conflict; the brand’s “100x” was down-weighted as an unverified best-case claim, and the forum’s taste preference was set aside as a separate question.

  • The confidence: high that the general tap supply is safe, because an official report and an independent check agree; lower for any one home until its own pipes are checked.

  • The uncertainty: the lead-pipe risk depends on each specific home, and taste, a real reason some prefer bottled, is not a safety matter.

  • What would change it: an independent test showing this town’s supply exceeding a safety limit, or a specific home’s pipe test showing raised metals, would change the answer for that case.

Notice the bad moves the model avoids. It does not give the brand’s “100x” false balance against the official report, it does not cherry-pick the reassuring report while dropping the lead-pipe finding, and it reconciles the conflict through the hidden plumbing condition rather than forcing a limp middle. If you scoped the taste question instead, that is a different, values-flavored inquiry, and keeping it out of a safety answer is exactly the right call.
