Pick the correct edition for your needs

The right edition for you will depend on what sort of context you'll be coding in.

Microsoft's Visual Studio comes in different editions for Windows:

  • Visual Studio Community

  • Visual Studio Pro

  • Visual Studio Enterprise

Visual Studio Community

This is the free version of Visual Studio. It's for individual developers to write applications for any platform.

As mentioned in the last chapter, this IDE has all the features for writing, compiling, debugging, and publishing your application.

Visual Studio Pro

The next step up is the Pro version, which is for individual developers or small teams. It has all the same features that the Community edition has, plus more tools to help with collaboration with other developers.

You can purchase Visual Studio Pro as a monthly or yearly subscription. View Current Pricing.

Visual Studio Enterprise

This version is designed for any size team that needs the ability to scale their application to any size. It comes with a comprehensive set of tools for designing large complex enterprise applications.

It has everything that the Pro edition offers, plus the following:

  • Managing the complexity between development and IT operations.

  • Additional tools for advanced debugging and diagnostics.

  • Ensuring continuous quality with automated and manual testing tools.

Enterprise pricing is not cost-effective for the individual, but more for mid to large companies. View Current Pricing.

Let's recap!

  • Visual Studio for Windows comes in three editions.

  • Visual Studio Community is the free edition.

  • Visual Studio Pro is for small teams.

  • Visual Studio Enterprise is for large teams and companies.
