Why Become an IT Technician?

Hello everyone and welcome to this course, which will explain all you need to know about the IT technician profession.

What Is an IT Technician?

An IT technician ensures that IT equipment is functioning correctly and provides solutions to users in the event of defects or problems.

There are several different job titles used across the IT technician profession:

  • Network and systems technician

  • Support technician

  • Help desk operator

  • Help desk technician

  • Network and telecoms technician

  • IT maintenance technician

  • IT support technician

  • IT operations technician

  • IT support and maintenance manager

Here’s an example of an IT technician’s typical day:

  1. You arrive at the office. There are some new hires to the organization! You start by issuing them computer hardware, which you will have previously configured. You installed the necessary software to ensure they can access all their essential tools. 

  2. Once finished, you log on to the application that stores user queries and requests, prioritizing them based on urgency and importance. 

     

  3. You find out that the printers aren't working and need to deal with it. After analyzing the problem, you identify a solution. Your aim is to ensure that all the IT resources are functioning correctly.

  4. A colleague comes to see you because they've forgotten their password. You unlock their account, remind them of IT security best practice, and help them choose a secure password.

Many organizations have embarked on a digital transformation journey by increasing their range of digital services, such as online training, calendar management, video conferencing, instant messaging, collaborative workspaces, and invoicing. As a result, they need technical experts to help them.

What Salary Can I Expect to Earn? 

An IT technician can expect to earn around £25,000 gross per year (entry-level) up to £35,000 (experienced) in the U.K. and $30,000 (entry-level) up to $45,000 (experienced) in the U.S. (Sources: Total Jobs, Indeed). However, salary can vary depending on the organization’s size and the region.
