Discover What’s Behind ChatGPT

Chapter banner

In this course, we’re going to learn to use ChatGPT. But what even is it? 🧐

We’ve been talking about artificial intelligence for many years. So, what has suddenly changed?

Over the years, developers have been creating increasingly intelligent AIs and ChatGPT was a real revelation for many people. All of a sudden, the whole world felt that they could chat to an AI bot and ask it to do things that the AI could understand and do very well.

But, as we know, it’s certainly not perfect. There are always going to be times when AIs like ChatGPT get things wrong or fail to understand. However, many people (including me) believe that ChatGPT generally works really well.

Nowadays, knowing how to use ChatGPT can give you a real competitive edge, which means you can save a lot of time. But you do need to know how to use it, and that’s where this course comes in! 😃

You’ll see how easy it is to generate your first results using ChatGPT. But if you want to master the art of talking to ChatGPT to get better results, this requires practice.

Discover the ChatGPT Interface

ChatGPT is a chatbot or, more officially, a conversational agent. It’s an interface where you can have a discussion and ask questions, just as you would with a real person on any instant messaging platform. Except in this case, you’re speaking to an AI system.

Not bad, huh? 😃

ChatGPT has understood the question and has given a decent response.  Okay, so perhaps some of the terms it’s used are sometimes a little bit complex. We’re looking for a simpler introduction. But that’s why ChatGPT is so powerful. We can continue our conversation and ask it to refine its response.

So, in this case, I’m going to ask it to change its response so that I can share it with my grandfather, who isn’t well versed in new technology.

ChatGPT adapts its speech for my grandfather!

From my point of view, there are a number of extraordinary things happening here:

  • ChatGPT has taken our previous conversation into account. There’s no need to tell it that I’m looking for an introduction. It understands because it has remembered the context, a bit like a human would.

  • It totally understands what I mean when I say “my grandfather, who’s not very comfortable with new technology” and it removes any technical terms from the response, such as GPT-3.5, deep neural network, etc. Instead, it calls itself a “well-read robot.”

You can ask it to help you generate new ideas, summarize texts, extract data from a text and lots more.

Find out the Answer to Some Common Questions

ChatGPT is perfectly capable of generating text, as we’ve just seen, but it can do a lot more:

  • Summarize texts

  • Translate texts (into many different languages)

  • Generate ideas

  • Extract information

  • Write computer programs (that work!) in different coding languages

  • And lots more!

But how does it work? 😮

There’s nothing magic about it. It’s “just” a computer program designed to write text and assemble words.

How much does it cost?

At the moment, it’s free to use ChatGPT.

There’s a premium version, which gives you first access to the latest features that we’re also going to tell you about. It’s worth knowing that the free version is often overloaded and you might have to wait in line to use it, whereas if you pay for it, you can access it at any time.

There are a number of competitors that have started to emerge, including some open-source projects (such as LLaMa, Mistral, etc.) that are free to use. Their performance is not as impressive, but they are evolving quickly.

Who’s behind ChatGPT?

A company based in the United States, called OpenAI. The company was established in 2015 with the aim of developing a highly intelligent AI system called “AGI” (Artificial General Intelligence), a type of AI capable of performing any task. They haven’t yet managed to create this, but ChatGPT represents a huge step in that direction.

Microsoft holds a 49% stake in OpenAI, which means the project can retain autonomy in decision-making while still being adequately financed.

At the present time, ChatGPT only works with text. There are other AI engines out there which can generate images, sound, and even video content. I’ll talk about this briefly at the end of the course.

Let’s Recap

  • ChatGPT is an AI program that generates phrases or entire texts on demand. It has a chat interface that enables users to ask questions and have a conversation with the AI.

  • If you want to get the best out of ChatGPT, you need to learn “prompt engineering,” which is the art of asking the right questions to ensure you get a precise answer.

  • ChatGPT can summarize texts, translate, generate ideas, extract information, write code, and lots more besides.

  • This AI tool is available free of charge and has a paid version that offers additional benefits and features.

  • ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI, a company based in the United States that’s partly owned by Microsoft.

Now let’s focus on ChatGPT! In the next chapter, we’re going to see how to access ChatGPT.
