To serve our users, we have developed:
Courses: most courses combine text, videos and exercises. It can take between several hours and several days to finish a course on average. Courses are completely free for everyone, but you can opt for a Premium Solo account if you want to watch more videos and get a certificate upon completion of the course.
Paths: these are a combination of courses, projects, mentorship and a community discussion section. It usually takes between six and twelve months to complete a full path. A path can lead you to a State-endorsed degree! To follow these paths, you need to have a Premium Plus account.
Consider someone like Michael (see personas chapter). He's a student, so he doesn't have much money and he's already in a business school anyway. He feels he needs more skills so he's going to pick a few courses to learn more about programming.
On the other hand, Jennifer has a lot of interest in paths. She wants to prepare for a new job. She knows it will take time, but because she's a jobseeker, she can dedicate the time and effort required.
Jennifer also likes the fact that OpenClassrooms online degrees are recognized. In fact, it was the first question she's asked us: "How is it recognized?".
A course starts with a video trailer, followed by a short text introduction. You quickly see what you'll learn by following the course.
You should really check out a video teaser to get a sense of the energy! 🌟
The course itself is usually divided in parts, and then divided in chapters. This course has two parts and nine chapters for instance:
A course usually has between two to four sections, with ~five chapters in each section. Naturally, this varies as each course is different.
There are exercises at the end of each section:
Quizzes: this is a fast way of checking if you have understood the previous chapters.
Activities: these are small assignments that you must complete and upload online. You will receive correction and advice from other users. You must also correct other users - this is a nice way to learn!
At the end of each course, Premium users receive a certificate of achievement:
We do our best to make these courses engaging, useful and fun at the same time. That's why we look for teachers who are passionate about what they do. 😃
A path is designed based on the skills you need to do a real job. On a path, you'll find:
Courses (we have already discussed these)
Projects: each project requires several weeks or months of work to complete. Completing the projects demonstrates that you have acquired the skills.
We offer several paths like these:
Each path has a short description to explain what you will learn, what the professional sector is like and what you will need to do to complete the path.
If you scroll down, you'll see the list of courses and projects that this path combines:
A student has to complete all the projects in a path in order to complete the path (and then possibly earn their degree). Courses are optional: they are supposed to serve as a theoretical basis to help you achieve the projects. This is what we call a project-driven approach.
Once you join a path, you get your own mentor and you get access to the community discussion section on Facebook Workplace:
But the key element of the vocational training is your weekly videoconference with your mentor who will help you to stay on track, keep motivated and focussed! 💪
We hope that this short introduction to our product already gives you a better idea of what we do! 🙂
